INK REVIEW: Noodler’s Habanero

I don’t know why I’ve waited so long to fill a pen with Noodler’s Habanero. It’s one of a few inks that I know about before I test them and I had been really really excited about getting this for myself.
The swab above is a “cut” from the actual swab in the review below. I purposefully got the edge – because even with a darn cotton swab, it’s clear that this is a special ink.

Whoa, momma, look at that shading.  I’m so excited about this ink. I want to load up all of my pens with it and spend an entire day writing.

I really do love Habanero.  Definitely getting a full-sized bottle of it.

Does my score reflect my love?  Sixty-six seems low…but when you consider that 50 is average – this is definitely above average.
It’s not a perfect ink, is it? Smeared lots, not water resistant.
It sure is pretty, though. I’d say my love for Habanero rivals my love for Diamine Pumpkin. How many orange inks does one girl need? (Two – so far!)

Mr. P likes it, too – though he seemed to be focused on the broad nib. He calls me Chickie – isn’t that sweet?

Let’s talk about spicy food in the comments. Love it or hate it? Me, I am a total spicy food wimp.

INK REVIEW: Montblanc Winter Glow

hello gorgeous
Now. There is some red!  That in-yo-face color that I adore!
Highlight test went (surprisingly) well.
The colors in the Compare Squares don’t really compare at all – even for a second try! Even Tiananmen from Noodler’s and not even Florentine Red from Stipula.  No, Winter Glow from Montblanc is in a class by itself.

On very close inspection, it’s has a bit of spread. Spread = not quite perfect, but not really feathering. With the naked eye, though, this just isn’t noticeable on any of the papers I’ve used with this pen/ink combination.

Speaking of the pen/ink combination, you’ll notice that I used a Montblanc Boheme for this test. That’s because the ink is in a cartridge rather than a bottle. I have a bottle, too, just wasn’t ready to open it.
Wait, let’s be honest here, I wanted to try a MB ink in a MB pen and this is what I went with.

Suggest keeping it dry
The only bit of trouble I had was on the review paper (HP Premium Choice 32 lb.). Just a little hard starting.
The letter to Mr. P below is written on Whitelines Paper and it worked out just fine.

In closing, I’d like you to notice how kind I am to refer to the pen as his. Everyone knows all of the pens in the house (and in the cars, and in the world) belong to me.

The End 🙂

PEN REVIEW: Edison Nouveau LE Encore

How pretty is that??

This pen is the brainchild of Brian Goulet of Goulet Pens and Brian Gray of Edison Pens. Hopefully, they will have a new limited edition pen for us each year.

You can read my Pen Preview of the Edison Nouveau LE Encore. Lots more pictures there.

I wrote in that post that the one maybe negative was that the section doesn’t fit flush with the barrel. Total non-issue in use. Didn’t feel it, didn’t think about it. Non-issue.

This is the first review with my new form. I got so excited about inking and using the pen that I didn’t weigh it, measure it, or anything else. (I’m rethinking the idea of including weights and measures – or maybe I’ll just include anecdotal information like, “too short,” or “feels right,” we’ll see.) Since then, I’ve cheated and looked at the full description over on Goulet Pens. It weighs 16g and measures 5.2″ when closed.

Honestly, I considered not using the pen at all – it’s #3 in a production run of 70 and that makes it feel almost too special to use. But, really? All of my pens are for using. I don’t plan to sell any of them and so if I don’t use them – what’s the point?

I note in my handwritten review that I was maybe regretting the medium nib – thinking I should have gotten the fine. After using it for a bit, though, the medium is a good choice, but I would also like to have an Edison with a fine nib. Pentulant, you know.

Later in the review I discuss that I’m already planning my next Edison purchase. Actually, though, I gave Mr. Pentulant the Edison Beaumont for Christmas. It’s #2 in this picture. The Beaumont was named Pen of the Year (2012). Mr. P hasn’t inked the pen yet. If he doesn’t soon, I may need to recall the gift. Pentulant again.

Annnnyway….

The Edison Nouveau is comfortable, balanced, and pretty pretty pretty. Definitely going into regular use around here.

After I wrote all of the above, I asked Mr. P (aka Jeff) if he would like to take it for a spin. He likes it a lot. “Smooth. Like butter.”

But look, he’s also having intermittent start issues. I do feel like this is an issue of not being able to find the sweet spot and not an issue with feed or anything like that. The more I write with it, the less problems I seem to have.

Bottom line?  True love!

INK REVIEW: Pilot Iroshizuku – Fuyu Syogun

Wrapping up a couple of reviews before we move on to the new form…

Another sweet shade of gray from Pilot Iroshizuku – Fuyu-syogun does not disappoint!  I’m usually a purist when it comes to colors – I don’t dig muted shades, for example, give me a real, full color! But this gray (grey?) with a touch of blue is jussssst right.

I’ll spare you suspense. I’m totally ordering a bottle of this. It’s available most everywhere for $28 per bottle. Kind of expensive, right? But it’s such a joy to write with. Some of this must be the pen – I’m a sucker for a broad nib – and you know that I love me some Lamy Safari – but still. I’m swooning over here.

Not too wet. Didn’t seem too dry either.

Really. Look at this shading? And there’s not much feathering – even on this mid-quality paper.
And .. my (limited) understanding is that this ink is also known as Old Man Winter. How cool is that?

And! The news just keeps getting better. Look at that water test. What water test, you ask? Exactly!  (Actually, look in “from,” that’s the droplet test area and you can see just a bit of fading.)

I’ll stop blathering on so you can see what others are saying…
There aren’t a lot of people talking about this one. Have you tried it?

PEN REVIEW: Lamy Safari White

Clean!
Fresh!
Sharp!
I’ve been loving my Lamy Safaris lately. This one is white with a medium stainless nib.
Let’s havea quick look at this pretty thing. More in-depth reviews are coming up next week. Stay tuned.

It has a nice glossy quality to it.  I used to haaaate the look of the huge clip, but isn’t that nice looking? Like it could really hold on to something.  (Do you clip your pens to your shirts? Does anyone?)

Pen porn…

The converter doesn’t come with the pen. Inconvenient. But it does come with a cartridge. Convenient. If you’re into those. I’m not.

Love the way it writes. Love.  (Click to make images bigger.)

INK REVIEW: J Herbin – Gris Nuage

Here’s a quickie review of one of my favorite inks to get us back into the groove this week. (More on Thanksgiving another time.)
The above swab was done with a q-tip and then the name of the ink written with a glass pen. In my experience, there’s a lot of feathering with glass pens and this was no exception. (It also doesn’t help things that it’s written on a cheap-o index card.) (Again, I ask, are there are any nice index cards out there? Starting to think there aren’t.)
Anyway….Gris Nuage (Gray Cloud – how pretty!) is one of my very most favorite gray (grey, if you insist) inks.
It’s light – just like a cloud. It’s prettttttty. Leans more toward blue than red, but is definitely one of those pure colors that I adore.
And, holy crappoli (it’s a word), it writes like a dream. Check it out….
Pretty, yes?  Some lovely shading going on there, too. And no smearing, no feathering, no ghosting, or bleeding. What more could a girl want in a gray ink?

Oh, yes, it does well with water!  Nice!!!  This is totally one of my gray inks. It makes me swoon!

OK..so see those black specks on the water test?  No, it’s not Gris Nuage gone crazy – that’s collateral damage from my Invincible Black spatter. Haha!

Do you have a favorite gray? Mr. Pentulant was using Montblanc Oyster Grey for awhile in his fancy new Boheme, but he wasn’t loving it.

INK REVIEW: Noodler’s Purple

Woo Woo!
Now, there is some color!
Regal, royal, raving, raging – ok, I’m out of good “R” words.
I loooove this color. Love this ink.
It’s a bright purple. Grape, even. It looks like a color that a teenaged girl would love – a teenaged girl AND me!!
Let’s look at it more closely…
Click for bigger image

It’s not a perfect ink. A bit sloppy even for me – and I love me some wet writing. It smears easily. It feathers.
I’m glad I don’t have a Water Test complete – this means I can keep loving this ink – at least for now. My plan is to keep it short today, but to use the sample I have for a week or so, do a water test, and come back to talk about this in more detail another day.
I’m pretty sure that even if it’s too wet. Even if it won’t pass the water test (and it probably won’t). I’ll still love it. Color like that – meant to be loved!
Do you love purple inks? Are there any guys out there using purple? At work?
